Hannibal season three nearly included a kiss between Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy that was eventually scrapped.

Star Mads played cannibal Hannibal Lecter in Bryan Fuller’s visually stunning horror drama opposite Hugh’s nervy FBI criminal profiler Will Graham.

Mads revealed that both actors floated the idea of ending one intense scene with a kiss between Hannibal and Will after they murdered serial killer Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage).

‘We actually did a couple of takes of the very last scene where we were looking at each other, and it was a little too obvious — it was almost a kiss,’ Mads told Vulture.

‘Me and Hugh were like, “Why not? We have a couple of takes. Let’s do one. It might be cool.”’

Adding that they ‘never went’ in for the kiss in the end, the actor said: ‘Bryan loved it, but he was like, “Too much, guys. It’s too obvious.” And he was absolutely right. But I think we were just stuck on that.’

Looks like the show’s passionate followers – nicknamed Fannibals – will have to continue to envision it in their slash fanfiction instead.

Viewers were crushed when season three turned out to be the final season ever as the drama was later axed.

The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star confessed the cancellation came as a shock to the cast as seasons two and three pulled in ‘great’ ratings and plans for a fourth season had already been made.

However he is more than willing to resurrect the character to bring everything to a satisfactory conclusion – despite the long hours and flowery dialogue he had to learn in a matter of hours.

‘Everybody wants to go back, and if there’s only one season and we’re sure about that, he can finish it in a proper, surprising, stunning way,’ he said.
