Former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber has left her mark in the women’s game with a spectacular 2016 season. She won the Australian Open that year and ended the year on a high by winning the US Open. It was during this period that she attained the top spot in rankings.

Recently, while speaking to American legend Chris Evert, the German Angelique Kerber reflected on her fond memories during her final against tennis superstar Serena Williams. Kerber remembered that moment and stated, “I remember that moment because that was my first Grand Slam final. I was like that’s my day, let me try my best. I know she has all the experience and knows how everything is working and for me everything was new. So I was trying to put myself in the tunnel-like in the zone and not think too much.”

Angelique Kerber felt it was now or never

Angelique never knew if she would feature in a Grand Slam final again. Therefore, she wanted to make the most of the opportunity received. She remembered losing the second set of the match and with the support of the fans and her emotions, she crossed the finishing line.

The 33-year-old athlete further added, “When I started warming up, I was like let’s focus on tennis. I remember winning the first set, then she came back and it was more about my emotions in the final. I was really playing with my emotions, with the support of the fans, with the energy. Especially at my age, I was 28 years old and I was waiting on that moment for 10 years so I was like let’s go for it.”
