Kate Garraway revealed there have been ‘lots of little positives’ now that husband Derek Draper is home from hospital.

The 53-year-old returned back to their family home in London recently, after spending a year in hospital amid a devastating coronavirus battle.

He had been one of the worst-affected Covid-19 patients to survive in the UK, but the condition wreaked havoc on his body, leaving him in a coma for months.

Appearing on today’s Good Morning Britain, Kate offered an update on his heath, and shared the ‘amazing’ moment he noticed that she was wearing a brand new dress.

‘It’s been wonderful having Derek at home, and lots of little positives,’ she told Susanna Reid and Adil Ray. ‘Whether those are positives because it is genuinely helping his cognition being at home, or whether it’s just because I’m there to see the little things whereas I couldn’t go in before…

‘I don’t know but it feels positive. Little moments of reaction. He actually said something the other day, I walked in in the morning just before I left to go to Smooth. I said, “I’m off to Smooth now”, and he said, “New dress?” which was just amazing. And it was actually!

‘I thought that was amazing on so many levels, because he recognised it, second he realised or remembered that I need a lot of flattery, so there was some emotional connection there, and some basis of what our relationship was always based on.

‘It was just a little moment and then, of course, there was nothing and we’re back to the bits in between.

‘So lots of little moments, and also a very busy home now with lots of experts and teams of people coming in and out.’

‘So far, so good but I don’t want to tempt fate,’ she added.

After more than a year in hospital, Derek was discharged back to his family home just weeks ago, with Kate and their children – William and Darcey – rejoicing at the news.

His coronavirus battle was the subject of an emotional ITV documentary where viewers saw the impact his health issues had on his loved ones – and the changes that had been made to their house to accommodate his return.

During a recent stint on GMB, the I’m A Celebrity star explained that he would be needing 24-hour care during his recovery.

‘He can’t really move,’ she said. ‘We do need a lot of help, and it’s not just help with looking after him, because it is 24-hour care.

‘He’s probably got a little bit used to the people in hospital and so it’s a new team now that are working with him and helping him to come through.

‘It’s going to take a lot of adjustment.

‘We’ve got to stay positive and have hope. We’ll get there. He’s here!’

Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays, at 6am, on ITV.
