Mike Tyson Explains the Importance of Having an Ego: ‘Without an Ego, We’re in a Lot of Trouble’
Mike Tyson is one of the most intimidating fighters the sport has ever seen. Moreover, the former heavyweight world champion had the personality to match his reputation. Tyson has shown flashes of his ego in the past by living a lavish lifestyle and owning several expensive possessions. However, fans now have an explanation why ‘Iron Mike’ chose that lifestyle and made the decisions he did.
The 50-6 boxer spoke to Cheech and Chong on an episode of ‘Hotboxin with Mike Tyson’. When speaking about an ego, Tyson said, “Once your ego is gone, you will be the biggest b**ch in the world. And that’s what we’re made out of, ego. Without an ego, we’re in a lot of trouble.”
This comment explained why the legendary boxer believes an ego is important. While many will point to a fighter’s ego as their worst enemy, Tyson also confirmed, “But it’s not the enemy.”
Thus, Tyson made no secret of his approval for fighters who have an ego. And given his recent podcasts, it is clear to see that he enjoys being around such combat athletes.

Mike Tyson has changed his ways
Tyson was the youngest heavyweight champion in the sport’s history. He scaled the summit of the division at 20. So inevitably, ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ developed an ego very early in his career. However, he has since changed his ways.
The former champion had his troubles with his lavish lifestyle and even did jail time. As a result, after his retirement, ‘Iron’ Mike focused on correcting his ways of life. Moreover, he even advocated for the younger generations to strive for peace.
Furthermore, Tyson has opened up about his regret at owning pet tigers and other things that he did out of ego. So although ‘Iron’ Mike is advocating for people to embrace their ego, he has learned to control the same. Hence, this may be what he wants the up-and-coming stars to do as well.
