“That’s Family” – Jimmie Johnson on Keeping Regular Contact With Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott, and Former NASCAR Team
This past Sunday, Alex Bowman took the iconic NASCAR no. 48 car back to Victory Lane on the same day Jimmie Johnson returned to racing in his much-awaited IndyCar Series debut. Johnson himself had phases where he impressed on his way to a 19th place finish on debut.
The 7-time Cup champion has been away from the Hendrick Motorsports stable and his long-time teammates since his final race in November last year. While Johnson himself has been very busy trying to find his feet in a new racing discipline, he has been in constant contact with his NASCAR ‘family’.
The champion driver said that he knows they’re watching him in the IndyCar Series as well and are very interested in his exploits there. At the same time, ‘7-time’ is keeping a close eye on the likes of Bowman, Chase Elliott, Chad Knaus, and the team.

“I’m plenty busy and so are they. From Cliff (Daniels), Chad, Greg (Ives), Alex, Chase, and even Alan Gustafson, I’ve stayed in contact with those folks. Probably once a month, twice a month. Jeff Andrews as well,” Johnson said in a recent interview.
“That’s family there. I know they’re all watching me. Now they know that I’m on track, but when I can, I’m watching them and cheering for them,” he added.
Right after Bowman’s win on Sunday, during the press conference, he was really interested to know how Johnson had performed in his race and was happy for his idol when he learned of his debut.
Thanks for getting the 48 back to victory lane @Alex_Bowman! I’m so happy for you, @Ives_Greg, @allyracing & everyone on the team.

“Really happy to see the 48 in Victory Lane”
Johnson was excited and emotional as well to see Bowman and the team win in the car he had so much success in himself. At the same time, he was thrilled to see sponsor Ally win their first Cup race with the team.
“Really excited for Alex, Greg Ives, and Hendrick Motorsports, and of course Ally. I wish I could’ve gotten them the win when they were on my car for those 2 years…I’m really happy to see the 48 back in Victory Lane,” Johnson expressed.
Up next for Johnson is the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg this Sunday. Meanwhile, Bowman will look to carry his winning momentum when the Cup field visits Talladega this Sunday.
