Caitlyn Jenner officially running for governor of California as she files campaign paperwork

Caitlyn Jenner is officially running for governor of California.

It was rumoured earlier this month that the former Keeping Up With The Kardashians star was considering a potential run to replace Democratic incumbent Gavin Newsom.

Now, Jenner has launched her website, Caitlyn for California, and her campaign.

The news was first confirmed by Axios, with Jenner’s team saying that she had filed paperwork to run for governor.

The 71-year-old said: ‘California has been my home for nearly 50 years. I came here because I knew that anyone, regardless of their background or station in life, could turn their dreams into reality.

‘But for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision.’

She added: ‘I have been a congressional disruptor throughout my life, from representing the United States and winning a gold medal at the Olympics to helping advance the movement of equality. As Californians, we face a now or never opportunity to fundamentally fix our state before it’s too late.’

Jenner is campaigning against high taxes and is critical of what she calls an ‘over-restrictive lockdown’ in the state. 

Advisors said that Jenner – a lifelong Republican – will talk to anybody, whether Republican or Democrat, and is running as is socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

While she may not be running as a Trump Republican in the historically Democratic state, Jenner has employed some key players from Trump’s campaign team.

Axios states that her team includes Tony Fabrizio, the top pollster on Donald Trump’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns, and Steven Cheung, a former Trump White House and campaign communications hand who worked on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s successful 2003 recall campaign.

Jenner was previously vocal in her support for Trump and voted for him in 2016, but rescinded her support after the then President rolled back guidelines allowing transgender students to use the bathroom that matched their gender identity.

The former Olympian came out as a trans woman in 2015. 

As Jenner’s website went live, so did her donation page, as well as an online shop selling Caitlyn for California t-shirts, hats, signs and mugs.
