Nine Players Refused to Team Up With Bubba Watson at Zurich Classic 2021

The Zurich Classic at New Orleans always brings the most exciting pairings on the PGA Tour. Not often do we see the likes of Bubba Watson and Scottie Scheffler form a team at an event. Watson, a 12-time PGA Tour winner, has joined hands with a player who’s almost half his age, and here’s how the duo agreed on becoming teammates.

Bubba Watson initially did not consider playing the Zurich Classic 2021. The 42-year-old contemplated about it for quite some time and made the decision to take part. But it took him quite a struggle to fix a teammate.

“Bubba asked like eight or nine guys and then they all said no, and he waited for me, and then I waited about four or five days, texted a few guys and no one responded, so I said yes,” Scottie Scheffler narrated the story of their team’s formation.

This is indeed a strange story of how the team was put together. Bubba Watson did not reveal why several players turned down the offer to play with him at Zurich Classic. However, he did mention that he rang Scheffler way too early with a proposition:

“Yeah, you were in Hawai’i. I was back home, so I texted him and he said, I don’t know if I’m going to play it. I said, that’s not what I said. I asked, yes or no, do you want to play as my partner. He waited a couple days and he texted me when he got back to, I think, Dallas. He said he was getting on a flight, and he said yes,” Watson informed.

Scottie Scheffler is thrilled to partner Bubba Watson at Zurich Classic 2021

Scottie Scheffler and Bubba Watson seem like an unlikely pairing. However, the players are enjoying their run at Zurich Classic 2021. As for Scheffler, the 24-year-old is purely excited to play alongside the two-time Masters winner.

Scheffler and Watson shot an opening-round 64 that put them in a nice position on the leaderboard. The pair is hopeful of making the 36-hole cut and enter the weekend.

“I feel like both of us kind of manage our games pretty well in that sense, and I’m looking forward to teeing it up and playing the rest of the week,” Scheffler expressed.

The dynamic duo of Scottie Scheffler and Bubba Watson is certainly exciting to watch. But the question is; do they have the capacity to contend for the title at Zurich Classic 2021?
