Alison Hammond has revealed that she is ‘wary’ about giving her child the coronavirus vaccine, despite being willing to get it herself.

The This Morning host, 46, discussed the vaccination roll-out in the UK and how successful it has been in lowering the rate of deaths from Covid-19 with guests Deborah Meaden and Gyles Brandreth.

The group discussed whether booster vaccines may be needed periodically to combat future strains of coronavirus and keep the pandemic at bay.

Deborah explained: ‘I’m not a scientist and I keep saying listen to the science, so – as Gyles [Brandreth] says – these things are evolving.

‘So absolutely, if the science says this is the right thing to do then we should be doing it because Covid exists now.

‘Covid exists forever and we are probably going to be in a rolling programme of vaccinations so we need to understand what that means and get comfortable with it, provided the science is telling us that is the right thing to do.’

Alison told Deborah she would be getting the vaccine herself but wasn’t sure about giving to to her son, too.

She revealed: ‘Well, as a parent I’ll be honest with you, I am a little bit worried… I am happy to have the vaccine but when it comes to my child, I am wary. That’s all that I am saying, I am wary about that.’

Gyles, who Alison had earlier joked she wished was her grandfather, reassured her: ‘Listen to grandpa, do it!’

It comes after sources claimed that children as young as 12 may be offered the coronavirus vaccine from September.

A Government source told The Sun: ‘Plans are in place to vaccinate children aged 12 upwards, and senior government officials have been briefed.

‘Though controversial, it is deemed necessary to stop the UK regressing in its remarkable fight against Covid.’

However, a spokesperson said no decisions had yet been made and it would depend on the outcome of clinical trials.

The statement said: ‘No decisions have been made on whether children should be offered vaccinations and we will be guided by the experts once clinical trials have concluded.’

Although children are at much lower risk of falling ill with Covid-19, they are still able to spread the virus.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
