How Good Was Penei Sewell back in college for the Oregon Ducks?

Penei Sewell will enter the NFL as the most dominant offensive linesman of his draft class. After playing out his college career with the Oregon Ducks, the 6’6″, 325 lbs offensive tackle is a force to reckon with.

Considered to be head and shoulders ahead of his competition, the offensive tackle of American Samoan descent is looking to make his mark in the NFL.

But what makes Penei Sewell so dominant? And is he honestly worth the hype? Well, his recent performances should dispel any doubts.

Penei Sewell as dominant as ever in college

Beginning his playing career with the Oregon Ducks as a true freshman in 2018, the four-star recruit from Saint George, Utah became a Freshman All-American.

While 2018 was just the start Sewell needed, 2019 is when the offensive tackle truly burst onto the scene. Sewell played left tackle for the Ducks and did not a single sack in over 926 snaps.

What’s even crazier is that in his two seasons with the Ducks, the tackle allowed just one sack in over 1,376 snaps.

Over that span, the tackle also allowed just seven pressures and two QB hits on the QB. For his massive frame, the QB has exceptional agility and quickness.

Starting from holding off the pass rush to run blocking the offensive tackle did everything just right to be named a unanimous All-American.

Sewell’s performances also won him the Outland Trophy in 2019. The left tackle was also awarded the Morris Trophy for being the best offensive lineman in the Pac-1 back in the same season.

Sewell decided to sit out the 2020 season due to concerns surrounding the pandemic. He instead focused on preparing for the draft.

An elite run-blocker with the ability to negate the pass rush, for Penei Sewell, the sky is the limit. Plenty of NFL franchises have been keeping a close eye on the tackle.

Among one of the team’s interested are the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals had drafted QB Joe Burrow with the first overall pick in 2020. But the team soon lost its rookie QB midway through the season due to an ACL injury.

Thus to better protect their asset under centre, it would a wise move for the franchise to draft Penei Sewell in the upcoming draft.
