Should Robert Saleh Look To Strengthen the Jets Defense or Invest In Offense To Support Zach Wilson?
The New York Jets are in rebuild mode. After going 2-14 last season, the franchise fired Head Coach Adam Gase and traded starting quarterback Sam Darnold.
Hiring former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as the team’s new head coach, the Jets are looking to turn things around in 2021. The trade of Darnold means that the franchise is almost certain to draft a new QB.
And with the 2021 QB class being as stacked as it is, the New York Jets will have a lot of good options to choose from. And reports suggest that with the second overall pick, the franchise is likely to draft BYU’s Zach Wilson.
But even apart from Wilson, the Jets will have a lot of other gaping holes to fill. Thankfully, they have the draft capital to do that.
But what should the side do with those picks? Do they provide their new QB with some new tools on offense. Or do they draft players on the other end of the field to sort out their defensive woes?
Zach Wilson likely to get help on offense
The Jets have plenty of picks to go around in the upcoming draft. The franchise has struggled on defense for some time now. The Jets have brought in six players on defense in free agency.
Saleh too is a D-coach thanks to his time with the 49ers. But the feeling is that the Jets will look to load up on their offense in the draft.

After trading Sam Darnold, Jets GM Joe Douglas made it clear that the franchise doesn’t plan on leaving their new QB high-and-dry.
“We have to surround our new quarterback with as much talent as possible,” said Douglas.
The idea doesn’t sound too bad. The Jets struggled with their O-line and wide receivers corps in 2020. Thus drafting Zach Wilson and not bringing in reinforcements to give him support could have a damaging effect on the career of the young QB.
The side is likely to draft a cornerback in the later rounds as the Jets secondary is something that immediately needs an upgrade. But the focus should primarily be on providing all the pass protection and aerial support to Zach Wilson in his debut season in the NFL.
