UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman’s Insane Training Regime

UFC welterweight kingpin Kamaru Usman will defend his belt against Jorge Masvidal this weekend at UFC 261. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has fought ‘Gamebred’ and looks to build on his performance from last time. Yet another win will further elevate him in the conversation of the best welterweight in history.

Ahead of the monumental event at Jacksonville, Florida, we take a look at the champion’s training resume to stay in shape and get fight-ready. Usman mixes up his training in three parts. Majorly, he does conventional strength training that is similar to bodybuilding training. His other trainings include MMA sparring and wrestling drills.

Kamaru Usman strength training

Usman has an incredibly strong core. That is mainly the result of his training routine, as he does a lot of deadlifts. Apart from that, Usman does a lot of medicine ball workouts that involve his back, shoulders, and core muscles. He also does a lot of sled dragging, which is one of his favorite exercises.

Usman mainly prefers compound movements, exercises that involve more than one body part. However, he also likes to do isolation workouts for his chest, shoulder, and other body parts.

MMA sparring

Usman does grueling punching and sparring rounds over the course of his training camps. This includes boxing training, kickboxing training, striking technique drills, and more.

He also practices submission drills and submission escapes along with his MMA sparring. These drills focus on his skills and conditioning.

Wrestling training

Shoulder rolls, basic wrestling moves and holds, and clinch work are some of the most important training for his wrestling preparation. Usman is an accomplished wrestler. He uses the trait as the base of his skills inside the Octagon. So, he trains it accordingly to keep his movements sharp always.

Usman currently is trained by Trevor Wittman, who happens to be a very renowned and well-respected coach. Certainly, that has been paying him his dues, as ‘The Nigerian Nightmare‘ is one of the most accomplished champions to ever grace the UFC Octagon.
