Conor McGregor refuses to fight Dustin Poirier at 170lbs after UFC rival’s Twitter challenge

CONOR McGREGOR has rejected Dustin Poirier’s challenge to take him on at welterweight for their third and final fight of their trilogy.

On Sunday, The Diamond, 32, called on McGregor to move up to 170lbs for their UFC 264 fight on July 10 in Las Vegas on Twitter.

But McGregor, also, 32, shot his American rival down with a brutal, one-word reply.

Poirier had tweeted: “Lets do it at 170lbs. 3 fights 3 different weight classes.”

But, often a man of so many words, 22-5 McGregor simply rejected the request, quote-tweeting: “No.”

Notorious famously suffered a brutal second-round KO loss to Poirier in January in the main event of UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi at lightweight.

McGregor had previously won their first fight at featherweight in 2014.

And Poirier clearly believed he had the edge at the heavier weight class as he hoped to tempt the Irishman to fight at welterweight.

McGregor has fought three times at 170lbs – for his 2016 loss and subsequent rematch win over Nate Diaz and his 2020 victory over Donald Cerrone.

But it seems he will push to take on Poirier at lightweight once again.

And fans will be fortunate to see it hit their screens after UFC chief Dana White revealed the trilogy showdown was on the brink of being called off.

McGregor seemingly pulled the plug on the series decider after Poirier revealed he’s yet to make good on his £363,000 ($500,00) donation to his charity The Good Fight Foundation.

Poirier later apologised to McGregor ‘making private matters public.

But White insisted the fight will go ahaed, telling TSN: “There was a lot of chances that was gonna fall apart.

“I saw some conspiracy theorists thinking that that was to help promote the fight.

“Absolutely none of that was done to help promote the fight. I can assure you of that. But we got it done.

“We had to go back and forth. Listen, man, we’ve been doing this for 20 years.

“This is what we do. We get it done.”
