Is Roger Federer Playing at the ATP Mutua Madrid Open 2021?
Tennis superstar Roger Federer has returned to the men’s Tour after more than a year. Upon his return, he played his first tournament in Doha. Although he made an early exit, he was content with his performance. However, he has not competed in any event since then and has used his free time to practice and improve his form.
Considering that the Mutua Madrid Open is around the corner, there was speculation of Roger Federer playing his first clay-court event in two years in the Spanish capital.
Since the 39-year-old player has enjoyed success on multiple occasions in Madrid, it is a suitable option for him to resume his season; the conditions would be familiar to Federer.
Roger Federer intends to feature at Roland Garros this season
However, the Swiss ace provided fans with an update on his schedule for the near future. He intends to compete at the French Open this year, and in order to be at his best, he will need to feature in a warm-up tournament prior to the second Grand Slam event of the season.
Interestingly, the only event he has confirmed his appearance at is the ATP Geneva Open 2021. Since he has made this decision, he will not feature in any of the two ATP Masters 1000 clay court events remaining – Madrid and Rome.
Reflecting on Federer and his results at the Mutua Madrid Open, he is a three-time champion at the venue. He won his first title in 2006, when the tournament was conducted on hard courts. He beat the King of Clay Rafael Nadal in 2009 to claim his second title. In 2012, he lifted the title on the blue-colored clay courts.
