Maura Higgins reveals boyfriend Chris Taylor’s concern as workout ‘obsession’ stopped her periods for four months
Maura Higgins has revealed she stopped getting her period for four months after developing an ‘obsession’ with working out.
The Love Island star has opened up about her relationship with exercising but admits her mission to remain in shape caused her to ‘lose too much weight’ to the detriment of her menstrual cycle.
Speaking to the Mail Online, she explained: ‘It got to a stage where it was actually affecting my periods; I lost my period for four months. Especially at my age, it’s obviously not good. I want to have kids someday so I know that’s just not a good thing to happen.’
Maura’s weight loss caused concern for her boyfriend, Christopher Taylor, who advised her to cut back on her workouts.
The reality star recalled: ‘I remember even Chris was saying to me “Maura, that’s just not good, we need to sort this out” I was like “yeah, I know”.
‘When you have good people around you, mammy as well, she noticed, she said “you’ve got too thin” or whatever and I was like “yeah, yeah, yeah I know, I’m trying to sort it out”.’
Maura, 30, is now working out less and sticking to twice a week maximum and says she’s ‘really good’ with her diet and has a balance. She ‘eats what she wants’ at the weekends and tries to stick to healthier foods during the week.
‘But with the exercise, it’s very easy to get obsessed with it,’ she admitted.
Earlier this year, Maura opened up about the importance of feeling comfortable in your own skin and shared an unfiltered photo of herself going make-up free.
She captioned the Instagram post: ‘RAW … like many of us, there are so many times I stop to read the nasty comments in my DM’s or online & every single time I can’t help but think of the younger generation stepping on the social media bandwagon!
‘Us women especially get criticised day in and day out about our body’s, hair, makeup, skin…I could go on forever.
‘I am very lucky to be confident inside & out and I want to empower woman to do the same. We don’t need to use filters or apps, being yourself is more than enough although a minority of the online community sometimes try and convince us otherwise. [sic]’
She added: ‘Everyone preaches to be kind to others when really we need to also preach how important it is to be kind to ourselves; be comfortable and proud in your own skin.’
