Baby Surgeons: Delivering Miracles viewers were left in tears on Monday night as a woman underwent a transfusion in her womb to save her only surviving triplet.

The new Channel 4 programme focuses on patients in the Fetal Medicine unit at St George’s Hospital in London, filming their experiences in intimate and often emotional scenes.

This evening’s episode followed expectant mother Ann-Marie, who had fallen pregnant with identical triplets at the start of her journey.

After losing one of her triplets in the ninth week of her pregnancy, distressing scenes saw her learn that the second triplet had also died in the womb.

Anne-Marie was heartbroken to discover the news during her 28th week of pregnancy.

Surgeon Professor Thilaganathan explained that there was nothing anyone could have done to prevent the tragedy.

‘I don’t wish to be harsh, but I have to focus my concerns on her sister,’ the professor told Anne-Marie as he stepped up efforts to save the third triplet.

‘It is definitely emotional. Because you’ll have to explain it to them at one point. Because they are all identical she was going to live exactly the same life as you,’ Anne-Marie said about her loss.

Anne-Marie decided to name the triplet who died Emily-Marie and the remaining triplet Poppy Emily-Marie, so she ‘will always have her sister with her’.

The third triplet faced a struggle to survive after Professor Thilaganathan told her mother she has anemia and that she’d require a blood transfusion before birth.

When the big day came after 30 weeks, Anne-Marie delivered Emily-Marie in upsetting scenes and was then left alone for a moment of reflection.

Anne-Marie then successfully gave birth to healthy baby Poppy. Holding onto her girl, Anne-Marie was overjoyed to welcome her new baby but said the loss of Emily-Marie was deeply upsetting.

‘The last time I was here they were both alive so it’s quite hard actually,’ she said, speaking three months after the birth of Poppy.

Viewers were left in tears during the programme, taking to Twitter to share their congratulations after the baby was born.

‘What an amazing and emotional show, crying my eyes out,’ one said.

‘What an amazing program, so amazing what they are able to do, I am in absolute bits watching it tho,’ another added.

Elsewhere on the show, baby Annie was born healthy after having surgery to remove a tumour at just 17 weeks old.

Randika also gave birth to a baby after having suffered three miscarriages and being told she would never be able to have children because she had a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.

Baby Surgeons: Delivering Miracles continues on Monday at 9pm on Channel 4.
