The new Mastermind winner has become a record-breaker as the youngest person to win the quiz in its 49-year history.

Jonathan Gibson, 24, a student from Glasgow, was crowned the winner of the latest episode, winning by four points in the Grand Final.

In the last ever episode of John Humphreys hosting the series, Jonathan scored a perfect 11/11 in his specialist subject, comedy song writing duo Flanders and Swann.

His quick general knowledge skills pushed him over his competitors and took home the coveted Caithness Glass bowl.

Jonathan is studying a PhD in Modern History at the University of St Andrews, and had previously impressed with his know-how on Agatha Christie’s Poirot in his initial heat.

He then chose William Pitt The Younger in his semi-finals.

The celebrated occasion was a great final farewell to Humphreys, who leaves the show after 18 years and 735 episodes.

He will be replaced by Clive Myrie, a BBC news journalist and a regular presenter of the BBC News at Six and Ten, who was announced in March to be taking over the famous leather chair.

Ahead of his debut, Clive said in a statement: ‘What a privilege it is to take on this new role. Mastermind with Magnus Magnusson formed the backdrop to my youth, and now to be at the helm is a dream come true.

‘I’m excited and can’t wait to get stuck in.’

He becomes the fifth host in the show’s history following Magnusson, Peter Snow, Clive Anderson and Humphrys.
