The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 trailer dropped during the Oscars ceremony – and the fight for Gilead is officially on, but at what cost?

Leading character June, played by Elisabeth Moss, is heard making a declaration to free the women of the country – but as she does, every woman we see continues to be imprisoned, chained and abused by those who ‘own’ them in this gritty dystopia.

‘My name is June Osbourne. Mine is just one voice, countless others remain unheard,’ she said.

‘Women imprisoned by men who can never be heard again. It is for those women, I ask for justice.’

In the new series of the show, June’s fight to free Gilead continues, but the synopsis warns that it may come at a price for our lading heroine.

It reads: ‘The risks she takes bring unexpected and dangerous new challenges, and her desire for justice and revenge threaten to consume her and destroy her most cherished relationships.’

The series is an extension of the world written by Margaret Attwood in her classic novel of the same name.

She has since published a sequel, The Testaments, but by the point of release the TV series had surpassed what she had written.

The new season of The Handmaid’s Tale has been hit with mixed reviews, with Entertainment Weekly titling there’s ‘Guys, just end it already’.

They wrote: ‘It’s suffering because Miller and company have become so enraptured by the show’s grandly executed atmosphere of prestige misery — used to stunning, Emmy-winning effect in season one — that they’ve started mistaking garden-variety brutality for brutal truths.’

However, AwardsWatch were far more kind, and said: ‘The fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale brings the audience something that they’ve been waiting for – a taste of long-awaiting freedom, rebellion, and sweet revenge.’

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 launches on April 28 on Hulu, with a UK release date not yet confirmed.
