Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl ‘wardrobe malfunction’ to be investigated in new documentary from team behind Framing Britney Spears
Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl halftime show will reportedly be the centre of a new documentary by the creators of Framing Britney Spears.
The 2004 performance, where Justin ripped a panel from Janet’s outfit mid-routine and exposed her breast, became an international talking point with Janet taking the majority of the public backlash.
The new film will focus on the public and industry reactions to both musicians – and why Janet seemed to suffer more than Justin did.
According to Page Six, a source said: ‘It’s going to be all about the fallout and the suits who f**ked over Janet [at] Viacom.’
The incident was labelled a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ by both Justin and Janet’s teams, with the Together Again hitmaker appearing shocked as Justin ripped her costume during Rock Your Body, exposing her breast which had a starred nipple-pasty on.
At the time, Justin did little to speak up for Janet, much to the continued fury of fans of the All For You singer.
Janet was banned from performing again at the football event, and blacklisted by broadcaster Viacom, while Justin’s career continued to flourish.
Filmmakers are said to now be looking at the dancers, directors and creators of the Halftime Show to shed light on what happened.
It’s not known if either performer will appear in the series, with Janet currently filming her own documentary on her life.
Justin recently posted an apology to Janet and ex-girlfriend Britney, after the worldwide success of Framing Britney Spears also highlighted his reluctance to defend Janet at the time of the Superbowl performance.
The production team drew parallels between the performance and Justin’s treatment of Britney following their 2002 split, which he appeared to use as a platform to elevate his own career.
Encouraging the story that she cheated on him, and bragging about taking her virginity on radio stations, he later released break-up anthem Cry Me A River, with the music video featuring a Britney lookalike.
In his lackluster statement, Justin – now 40 – said he ‘benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism’.
Naming Britney and Janet specifically, he said: ‘The industry is flawed. It sets men, especially white men, up for success. It’s designed this way. As a man in a privileged position I have to be vocal about this.
‘Because of my ignorance, I didn’t recognize it for all that it was while it was happening in my own life but I do not want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again. I have not been perfect in navigating all of this throughout my career.’
He concluded: ‘I know this apology is a first step and doesn’t absolve the past. I want to take accountability for my own missteps in all of this as well as be part of a world that uplifts and supports.
‘I care deeply about the wellbeing of the people I love and have loved. I can do better and I will do better.’
