“She Does Not Win Them Anymore”: Coach Patrick Mouratoglou Analyses Serena Williams’ Performance at Grand Slams

Twenty-three-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams has not performed up to her usual standards at the Grand Slam events recently. Anything less than winning the title is a disappointment for her, such are her standards. Although she has reached the finals, she has been unable to cross the final hurdle.

Recently, Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou reflected on her recent results at the Grand Slam events. The American athlete has played in four Grand Slam finals after becoming a mother. She is on the right path but needs to find the added motivation to cross the finish line.

The French super coach added, “Since becoming a mom, Serena has played four Grand Slam finals. The level is correct, we will say, but it is true that she does not win them anymore. There is a little history, in general. This history is an additional adversary. It’s a fact.”

Serena Williams has lost her last four Grand Slam finals

Serena has been in the finals of Wimbledon in 2018 and the 2018 and 2019 US Open. Well-established players like Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka, and Bianca Andreescu handed the American athlete those losses.

Mouratoglou has had a great influence on Williams’ career, and the pair have enjoyed tremendous success over the years. Besides Serena, he coaches rising talents like American teenager Coco Gauff and Greek tennis superstar Stefanos Tsitsipas. Recently, he was in Stefanos’ box when he lifted the Monte Carlo Masters.

Serena crashed out in the semifinal at the Australian Open 2021

In the current season, Serena started off with the exhibition event in Adelaide at the ‘A Day at the Drive’ event. After that, she competed at the Yarra Valley Classic but pulled out before her semifinal match due to a shoulder niggle. Later, she featured in the Australian Open and lost in the semifinal to eventual champion Naomi Osaka.

Since then, she has not featured in any event and intends to resume her season at the WTA Italian Open in Rome. It will be a good warm-up tournament for her as the French Open is around the corner.
