Brit Award winners will be presented with a ‘double trophy’ at this year’s ceremony – so they can share it with a loved one.

There’s no doubting that the upcoming bash – hosted at the O2 Arena in Londonwill be a little different to previous years, due to coronavirus restrictions.

In a sweet change after a tough year, those who are triumphant will be handed an award that ‘comes in two parts’, designed by artists Es Devlin and Yinka Ilori.

The larger trophy is a colourful statue, while the smaller silver patterned one is around half the size.

Winners will be encouraged to give the smaller trophy to ‘someone they consider worthy’.

Speaking about the idea behind the iconic statue – which has previously been designed by Tracey Emin and Dame Vivienne Westwood – the artists explained that the decision was sparked in lockdown.

‘Yinka and I thought the best award that one could receive would be agency to award another,’ Es said.

‘Each recipient is invited to award the second trophy to someone they consider worthy – it might be recognition – or it might be someone that does something entirely unrelated to music.’

Yinka continued: ‘The idea came from the experience of lockdown, where your neighbour you’ve lived beside for six years and never say hello to suddenly gave you flowers, foods, acts of kindness.

‘I wanted to capture that.

‘I would describe it as two artists from different disciplines, different inspirations, coming together to design a trophy based around the idea of giving something back – acts of kindness.’

The Brit Awards will take place next month, in front of an audience of 4,000, as part of the Government’s live events pilot scheme.

Jack Whitehall will be hosting proceedings, with Dua Lipa, Griff, Arlo Parks and Headie One among the names set to take to the stage on the night.

The Brit Awards will take place at the O2 Arena, in London, on May 11.
