Great British Sewing Bee 2021 contestant Lawratu was in tears after suffering a major disaster in tonight’s challenge – but the judges were unable to get a hug from the judges due to coronavirus filming restrictions.

The 37-year-old local authority officer had a nightmare in the made-to-measure challenge as Esme Young and Patrick Grant tasked the contestants with creating a casual utility jacket with a relaxed fit and at least three pockets.

Things went from bad to worse for Lawratu as she struggled to attach the snaps to her design, and she was overcome with emotion as she faced critique.

‘Well, I like the colour,’ Esme offered as she looked at the garment.

‘If we didn’t have to keep our distance I ‘d give you a great big hug because you look like you need it,’ Patrick said, noting how upset Lawratu looked.

‘Sometimes things just don’t go well. Your collar isn’t well attached, you’re missing poppers. It’s just strewn with errors and there’s no more we need to say about it than that.’

‘Well give you a virtual hug,’ Patrick suggested.

Visibly emotional, Lawratu replied: ‘I know the feelings are there and the empathy.’

She was then seen wiping her eyes with a tissue, before telling the cameras: ‘It’s just very painful. What was up there wasn’t representative of me and I think that’s why I was upset.’

Viewers were in bits over the scenes and really felt for Lawratu.

‘Anyone else having a little cry at #SewingBee?’ asked one. ‘I hate physical contact but desperately wanted to give Lawratu a hug. Sometimes things just don’t go to plan and it’s a horrible feeling! Hope she got a big glass of wine after that episode.’

‘Please, please tell me that Lawratu got a hug from someone,’ another added.

Sadly though, it was the end of the road for Lawratu as the judges decided to eliminate her from the competition.

‘I totally get it, and to be honest, I think I would be disappointed if it was anyone but me because everyone has sewn so well,’ she said.

‘It has been a wonderful experience. The joy that sewing gives me, the pride that sewing gives me, it’s something that I’ll continue to do for a long, long time.’

Great British Sewing Bee airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One.
