Michael B Jordan has put us out of our misery and responded to the ongoing rumours that he’ll be playing Superman in the next movie.

The 34-year-old actor is already part of the Marvel family having starred as villain Erik Killmonger in 2016’s Black Panther.

However, reports emerged in 2019 claiming that Michael was considering moving over to the DC Extended Universe after meeting with Warner Bros., director JJ Abrams and his production company Bad Robot.

It was said at the time that the Without Remorse star hadn’t been persuaded to commit to the role as production on the blockbuster wouldn’t start for another few years.

Since then, fans have been on tenterhooks waiting for official confirmation of Michael’s casting but he’s now addressed the speculation.

Speaking to Jake’s Takes, Michael admitted that the rumours are a ‘compliment’, adding: ‘I appreciate people that think about me in that type of way for these roles. I don’t really have anything more to kind of give on that, other than it’s just flattering and I appreciate it.’

He then added coyly: ‘Whoever they get, or if it goes that way, I think it’ll be an interesting thing to see.’

Black Panther comics writer Ta-Nehisi Coates is officially attached to the upcoming Superman script and, coincidentally, Michael is currently working with him on the movie Wrong Answer alongside Ryan Coogler.

In November 2019, Variety reported that Warner were keen to revamp Superman and appeal to modern audiences, and casting an African-American actor would certainly do well for diversity.

The hiring of Coates speaks volumes for the direction of the new feature, as the writer is known for exploring issues facing the African-American community.

Confirming his involvement, the screenwriter told Shadow and Act in February: ‘To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films, and Bad Robot is an honour.

‘I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.’

Abrams added: ‘There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.’

Henry Cavill was the last actor to play Superman, starring in movies such as Man of Steel and both Justice League cuts.

Details on the new Superman are sparse but it was previously reported that the studio are eyeing up a 2023 release date.
