Hannah Gadsby has revealed she secretly got married three months ago.

The Australian comedian introduced her wife Jenney Shamash on social media, telling fans that they tied the knot in January.

The 43-year-old shared a picture to Instagram of her and Jenney eating ice-cream, and wrote: ‘I would like to introduce all y’all to Jenney Shamash. She is a producer extraordinaire. She is very funny and is really talented at reciting facts. It is a joy to behold.

‘We got married in January and we are very chuffed about it. For the record: this is me gushing. I am full of very positive feelings. This is a nice story.’

Hannah also thanked her fellow Aussies who voted for marriage equality, after same-sex marriage was made legal in December 2017: ‘My heart felt thanks to everybody who voted for marriage equality. #married #really? #yeahtotally.’

Fans and friends wished the couple congratulations, with comedian Michelle Buteau commenting: ‘awww I love love 🖤 congratulations.’

Russian Doll star Natasha Lyonne wrote: ‘Congratulations!’ while Sharon Stone wished the couple a ‘huge congrats’.

Comic Fortune Feimster added: ‘Right on, bud! Congrats 🎉🎉 I’m chuffed for you.’

Jenney worked as a producer on Hannah’s 2020 Netflix comedy special Douglas, and received an Emmy nomination for her production.

Hannah, from Tasmania, had been touring the comedy festival circuit since 2006, but reached international fame when her special Nanette landed on Netflix in 2018.

The show has received a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (much like Paddington 2) and earned critical acclaim for its exploration of topics such as homophobia, trauma, assault and gendered violence.

While Hannah said during the show that she was quitting comedy, the success of Nanette led to her going on tour with a new show, Douglas, and the 2019 show was released on Netflix the following year.

Douglas explored Hannah’s autism diagnosis, as well as the misogyny she has received as a lesbian woman.

Nanette and Douglas are available to stream on Netflix.
