Modern Warfare vs Black Ops: Which is the Best Call of Duty Storyline?
This is sort of an evergreen debate among fans of the Call of Duty franchise. While the franchise has many titles tying into the storyline of either MW or Black Ops, these two remain to be the two pillars of the Call of Duty world. The Black Ops series began as a sequel to the iconic title, World at War. On the other hand, Modern Warfare had a standalone beginning and was released before Black Ops. But the fact remains that both these series have a dedicated fanbase who are passionately protective of their favorite one.
Now, here is why MW and Black Ops seldom have fans who love both. It is because the two series are so different in terms of content, treatment, and even the multiplayer aspects. Modern Warfare is a series that takes players to a world of military combat as close to the real-life as it can get. The locale and the missions are quite similar to the ones the military actually goes on.
On the other hand, Black Ops is more of a re-telling of iconic events, kicking off with the World War, and then the Cold War. Now, what the Black Ops series features and has the liberty to include is the amount of variety in the different titles of the series. Each BO title has something new to offer, and the treatment of the storyline is quite different from that of MW.

The campaign of Call of Duty Modern Warfare vs. Black Ops: A comparison
Now, Modern warfare offers players fast-paced and hardcore action sequences. You are assigned missions, and your task is to carry them out. There can be no doubt about the thrill of the gameplay in Modern Warfare titles. A good example would be the iconic “All Ghillied Up” sniper mission from Modern Warfare. This one literally spelled out the phrase “edge-of-seat”. Furthermore, Modern Warfare features one of the most iconic storylines in all of video game history (Shepherd’s betrayal of Ghost and Roach, anyone?).
On the other hand, the Black Ops titles are more like investigative thrillers. As we uncover the memories of Alex Mason, we see one of the best combinations of cerebral and combat gameplay ever. This makes the gameplay experience more immersive for the players. Furthermore, Black Ops works as a spin-off to real-life historical incidents and has loads of iconic references. Off the top of the bat, the first BO title opens with the CIA ops Mason, Woods, and Bowman attempting the assassination of Fidel Castro.
However, some of the players in the community believe that the storylines of the Black Ops titles are less engaging. According to them, the series had taken a hit after the beautiful Black Ops 2. BO2 gave us one of the best Call of Duty villains of all time, the nefarious Raul Menendez.
Having said that, we all probably agree that both series have their merits. However, perhaps the community would give a slight edge to MW. What do you think?
