“Don’t Feel Like Joking Much Anymore”: Daniil Medvedev’s Coach Calls For Improvement Ahead of French Open 2021

World No.3 Daniil Medvedev pulled out of the Monte Carlo Masters 2021 after testing positive for COVID-19. However, he has recovered now and will be in action at the Mutua Madrid Masters 2021. The Russian hasn’t had a great record on clay so far in his career and will look forward to improving his stats on the surface this year.

In a recent interview, Daniil Medvedev’s coach Gilles Cervera answered whether the two-week gap between the Italian Open and the French Open 2021 would act as an advantage for Medvedev or not. Usually, there is a one-week gap between the tournaments. However, due to the postponement of Roland Garros this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the two tournaments will have a two-week gap.

“We’ll do Madrid and Rome. These tournaments will reveal things that will allow us to discuss and choose what will happen just before Roland Garros. For our training and possibly to play another tournament,” said Cervera.

The coach clearly mentioned that Medvedev is currently focussing on the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. He also hinted that the Russian could play another tournament to train himself more for the French Open 2021.

“Has a lot of room for improvement on clay”- Gilles Cervera on Daniil Medvedev

Interestingly, Medvedev is yet to win a match at the French Open. His coach also believes that he needs a lot of improvement in his gameplay to play better on clay. The team has been making jokes about the same to take some pressure off Medvedev, but Cervera now feels that it is time to get serious.

“He has a lot of room for improvement on clay. He’s never won a match at Roland Garros. We’ve been seen joking about it before, which is good for not letting the pressure get to us, but I don’t feel like joking much anymore,” added the coach.

Daniil Medvedev will begin the Mutua Madrid Open 2021 as the second-seeded player after Rafael Nadal. Fans expect him to gain his form again and come back strong in Madrid. Will Medvedev be able to win the Mutua Madrid Open title this year?
