Love and Monsters: All you need to know about apocalyptic Netflix film
As with most films this year, the journey of Netflix’s Love and Monsters to release was scuppered by the pandemic.
However, this isn’t the only hurdle this post-apocalyptic rom-mon(ster)-com has had to overcome to reach its audience.
This Oscar-nominated flick – which got a nod in the Best Visual Effects category – spent the best part of a decade being brought to the big screen, so we’ll hear none of these comparisons to Chaos Walking or Maze Runner, although of course the latter does share Dylan O’Brien as its star.
Here’s everything you need to know about the movie.
Is Love and Monsters based on a book?
Love and Monsters has been floating around Hollywood since 2012, when development began at Paramount Pictures with Night at the Museum’s Shawn Levy as producer.
At this stage it was called Monster Problems and was based on an original script by screenwriter Brian Duffield.
After six years of delays, production officially got the green light in the autumn of 2018.
Director Michael Matthews and lead actor Dylan O’Brien then joined the project ahead before the rest of the cast and crew were sorted for filming in Australia in March 2019.
Love and Monsters was lined up for a full theatrical release in spring 2020 until the studio was forced to delay and change its plans.
After initially looking at almost a year-long postponement to February 2021, the film finally got its day in select cinemas and on VOD in October 2020.
Netflix then announced an international release of the film to non-US subscribers for April 14 2021, and it has taken the platform by storm.
Who wrote the Love and Monsters script and what other screenplays have they written?
Newbie screenwriter Brian Duffield is responsible for Love and Monsters, having submitted it as a spec script to studios in Hollywood before he had any feature film credits to his name. He had made only one script sale prior.
In the years between the sale of his Monster Problems script, Duffield scored his first screenwriting gig with the dystopian juggernaut Divergent series, starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James.
He worked on the team that adapted Veronica Roth’s second novel for the screen, Insurgent, in 2015, which became his first screenwriting credit.
Between then and now, Duffield has kept busy, demonstrating his versatility with a variety of projects, from Western Jane Got a Gun, starring Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton and Ewan McGregor, to Kristen Stewart horror flick Underwater.
Love and Monsters is available to stream on Netflix now.
