Best TV shows to binge for interiors and home renovation inspo that’ll have you getting your DIY on

With everyone having spent more time at home than ever before in the past year thanks to lockdown, it’s no wonder many of us have turned to upgrading our spaces. 

Knowing where to start on a home renovation project – no matter the size or scale – can be tough, but there are plenty of shows for inspiration.

Whether it’s a complete build from the ground up a la Grand Designs or just some interior tweaks, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the difference to a space before and after. 

Even if you’re not planning to undertake any decorating yourself, who doesn’t love a look into the interiors of others – and there are plenty of shows to cater to that. 

Here are our pick of the best interiors and home renovation shows you’ll want to binge watch. 

Sarah Beeny’s Renovate Don’t Relocate 

Available on Discovery+, property expert Sarah Beeny unlocks the potential in houses to convince the current owners to makeover their space rather than to undergo a move. 

As well as providing great tips to maximise space and make your home work for you, there is also a very snazzy virtual ‘walkthrough’ feature, allowing the owners to experience what the ‘after’ would be like before any works are done. 

If only we all had this feature in real life too… 

The Great Interior Design Challenge

This BBC show sees amateur interior designers compete against one another to impress the judges and homeowners of properties they have been challenged to redesign. 

The Great Interior Design Challenge is full of great ideas with the added element of competition, but is sure to spark some home renovation ideas in any viewer. 

George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces

Available on Channel 4, Amazing Spaces is perfect to spark inspiration of how to transform the smallest of spaces for huge impact. 

George Clarke visits people who have used their imagination to turn everything from garages to horseboxes into incredible functional rooms.

The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes

While the houses on The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes are a bit more unattainable than on most shows, there is still something extremely satisfying about getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse at these unusual properties. 

Hosted by Caroline Quentin and award-winning architect Piers Taylor, properties on the BBC and Netflix show feature from around the world. 

Amazing Interiors

This Netflix show proves you can never judge a book by its cover, as properties that appear ordinary from the outside can hold some interesting secrets. 

From doll houses to the aquarium house, these creations prove that nothing is off-limits with a healthy dose of imagination and some DIY skills. 

Stay Here

Stay Here, which is available on Netflix, sees interior designer Genevieve Gorder and real estate broker Peter Lorimer team up to transform short-term rental homes into moneymakers. 

The pair have tackled properties all over the USA and prove that it often doesn’t take much to make a house even more appealing to renters and buyers. 

Grand Designs 

Available on Channel 4, Kevin McCloud meets people who want to pursue their vision of creating their dream home. 

While every project is unique, it’s most definitely not filled with amateur DIY-ers as the properties created are often on a gargantuan scale.

While most of us can only dream of designing and completing properties on this scale, it’s satisfying to watch a project go from ideas stage to completion all the same.
