“Biggest Question Mark”: Former Coach on Dominic Thiem’s Chances at French Open 2021 With Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic’s Presence

World No.4 Dominic Thiem hasn’t had a great season so far. After winning the US Open title last year, the Austrian hasn’t looked in great form. Surprisingly, he has a win-loss ratio of 5-4 this year which nowhere justifies the kind of player he is.

After playing at the ATP Dubai 2021, Dominic Thiem suffered an unfortunate knee injury. He didn’t play many tournaments after that but looks fit now and will begin as the third-seeded player at the Mutua Madrid Open 2021.

In a recent interview, Thiem’s former coach Gunter Bresnik revealed that Thiem is once again fit and healthy. He also mentioned that despite his recent struggles on the court, he is still the No.2 player on clay along with Novak Djokovic.

“Dominic is the biggest question mark. I know that he is physically in top shape. The rest is a stranger. For the last five years he was number 2 on clay with Djokovic behind Nadal,” said Bresnik in the interview. (Translated by Google Translate)

Bresnik coached Thiem till 2019 after which they decided to part ways. However, he still believes that Thiem is just behind Rafael Nadal when it comes to playing on clay. Right now, Bresnik is working with Gael Monfils.

Gunter Bresnik feels Dominic Thiem can prove to be a danger for Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the French Open 2021

Even though Thiem had a rough start in the 2021 tennis season, his former coach believes that he can turn the tables around if he succeeds at the Mutua Madrid Open 2021. He stated that if he plays well in Madrid or Rome, he can surely prove to be a big obstacle for Nadal and Djokovic at the French Open 2021. Bresnik also highlighted that looking at the current players, it is only he who can challenge them on clay right now.

“If he plays a quarter-final or a semifinal in Madrid or Rome, then the path will fit. Then he can also be right at the front in Paris. For me, Dominic is the only one again this year who can really endanger Nadal and Djokovic in Paris,” added the former coach.

Fans expect Thiem to make an incredible comeback at the Mutua Madrid Open this year. Will the World No.4 player be able to win his first Roland Garros title this year?
