Charles Oliveira’s UFC Win Streak and How He Achieved It

The UFC has scheduled a match between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler at UFC 262. The match was announced after the former lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement. The fight will go down as the main event of the evening at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Michael Chandler got his crack at the title after his first and only fight in the UFC against Dan Hooker, but Charles Oliveira had to take the long road to get his first title fight. Before embarking on his winning streak, he suffered a loss at UFC 218 against Paul Felder in the prelims. ‘The Irish Dragon’ ended the fight with a vicious elbow in the second round.

Despite his initial struggles, the Brazilian worked his way up the old-fashioned way by getting on an eight-fight win streak. He defeated top talents like Tony Ferguson, Kevin Lee, Clay Guida, and more to solidify himself as a worthy title contender. ‘Do Bronx’ has the record submission wins in the organization with 14 submission stoppages. He has ended five out of his last eight fights in this fashion.

Charles Oliveira goes on a submission spree

After the KO loss to Paul Felder, Oliveira turned the tables and went on a four-fight submission spree. He faced the UFC veteran, Clay Guida, in the early prelims of Whittaker vs Romero at UFC 225. Guida, who marched forward with all guns blazing, tried a single leg takedown. However, he got locked in a nasty guillotine choke and tapped out.

Oliveira’s second victory came over Christos Giagos in the second round. The first round was competitive, but ‘Do Bronx’ trapped Giagos in a rear-naked choke when he tried to get up.

Jim Miller faced Charles Oliveira in a rematch after eight years in December 2018. The duo met back in 2010 at Bell Center, Montreal under the main event of Georges St-Pierre vs Josh Koscheck. Miller won the first meeting by submitting his opponent in the first round. Oliveira had his revenge as he choked Miller out in under 80-seconds of their fight.

David Teymur became the fourth victim of Oliveira’s submission spree. Teymur, who fought a technical first round, was caught in the second and tapped to an anaconda choke.

The knockout wins over Jared Gordon and Nick Lentz

Jared Gordon faced the Brazilian at UFC Fight Night: Blachowicz vs Jacare in 2019. Gordon came out quick and strong in the first round. He tried to pressure Charles Oliveira, but got dropped to his knees with a picture-perfect right hand. ‘Flash’ tried to get up, but ‘Do Bronx’ was waiting and connected cleanly with an uppercut.

Oliveira handed Gordon his fourth career loss. Similarly, ‘Do Bronx’ knocked out Nick Lentz in the second round with a clean punch after dominating him in the first round.

‘Do Bronx’ submits Kevin Lee

‘The Motown Phenom’ Kevin Lee was coming out of a devastating head kick knockout victory over Gregor Gillespie. Lee came into the fight with full confidence, hoping for another impressive win. The first round, which was very close, saw Lee land a takedown and keep Oliveira on his back. Despite being on the ground, Oliveira was constantly working from his back, throwing elbows and fists.

The second round was almost one-sided. Lee got out-struck by his opponent and only managed a takedown where he almost got trapped in an armbar. Kevin Lee, who attempted his third takedown, failed, and got stuck in a fight-ending Guillotine Choke in the third round.

Tony Ferguson versus Charles Oliveira

Charles Oliveira’s latest win came over the former Interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson. They met back in December 2020 in the co-main event of UFC 256. This was the only fight out of the last eight where Oliveira wasn’t able to finish his opponent. However, it was more of a testament to Ferguson’s durability as he did not tap despite being in an arm-bar in the first round.

In the subsequent round, Charles Oliveira dominated and won by unanimous decision.
