How Does the Arrival of Justin Fields in Chicago Affect the Future of Nick Foles?

In almost Hollywood fashion, Matt Nagy-coached Chicago Bears traded up in the 2021 NFL Draft. They moved up from 20 to 11 overall in order to select a young quarterback in the form of Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields. The promising youngster will now fight it out with two veterans for a starting Berth.

After parting ways with former 1st-round pick Mitchell Trubisky this summer, the Bears signed Dalton on a one-year $10 million deal this summer. They already have Super Bowl-winning QB Nick Foles on their roster.

The 32-year old arrived in Chicago from the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020. They inherited the 4-year contract worth $88 million that Foles signed with the Jaguars in 2018. But the selection of Fields complicates things for all parties involved.

Will Nick Foles remain with the Chicago Bears in 2021?

There is no doubt that Nick Foles-led Philadelphia Eagles’ run to the Super Bowl LII trophy will go down in history as one of the greatest underdog championship runs of all time. However, the former third-round pick has struggled with Chicago Bears since moving in from Florida.

During his first season under coach Matt Nagy, Foles threw for 1,852 yards with 10 passing TDs against 8 interceptions in 7 starts. He managed just 2 wins as Chicago narrowly made it to the playoffs. But he was ruled out of the Wild Card Playoff with an injury as Trubisky started in the loss to New Orleans Saints.

However, with the arrival of Justin Fields, Foles must accept that his time in Chicago is nearing an end. As mentioned above, NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirmed that Foles is set to earn north of $9 million in the next two years. So the Bears might be interested in moving him on to another franchise in search of a veteran backup.

One potential landing destination for Foles is AFC East franchise, New York Jets. Joe Douglas and Co. drafted BYU’s Zach Wilson as the 2nd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. But right now, they don’t quarterback on the roster who has ever taken a snap in a regular-season NFL game.

Foles could be the perfect option to come in and provide backup to Wilson during his rookie year. I mean, who else to help guide a young quarterback than a former Super Bowl winner?
