Portuguese GP: Binotto Says Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Strategy was Ambitious
Scuderia Ferrari had a mixed day in the office at the Algarve International Circuit. Charles Leclerc managed to snatch a Top-6 finish, but teammate Carlos Sainz Jr ended up outside the points.
A less than favorable strategy put Sainz’s chances of getting a good finish to rest. However, Team Principal Mattia Binotto defended his team’s strategy vehemently.
“We leave this race disappointed, we wanted a better result,” Binotto said, “On paper this track could have favored us, but on Saturday we weren’t perfect with Leclerc. With Sainz, we wanted to try an undercut that didn’t work.
“We put it in difficulty by mounting the yellow tires. It was not a mistake, we had the ambition to pass Norris at that moment of the race. with the soft he was running well, we exaggerated with the ambition to pass him immediately.”

Having said all that, the team has to put this result behind them and move on. In the coming weekend, the F1 fraternity visits the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
According to Binotto, the Catalunya circuit is an excellent track to gauge how their season will pan out. In his own words, if their car is quick on that track, it will be quite fast on other tracks.
The Italian declared that the Maranello outfit is seeking redemption for its poor 2020 campaign. They all know that the car has plenty of potential; therefore, Ferrari want to be ready and get a better result.
Of course, success will not come overnight, but the Italian marquee will hope to advance in leaps and bounds. On the bright side, both drivers are well in the Top-10 in the championship. However, they will want to ensure that it stays that way in the coming races.
