Should Rookie Quarterback Justin Fields Start for Chicago Bears?

Matt Nagy-led Chicago Bears endured a tough outing in the 2020 NFL season. Despite finishing second in the NFC North, the Bears managed to qualify for post-season. But they were knocked out in the Wild Card Round at the hands of Drew Brees-led New Orleans Saints.

The Bears underwent a major overhaul this summer. They parted ways with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and brought in veteran Andy Dalton to compete with Nick Foles for a starting spot in 2021. Dalton was being touted as ‘QB1’ for Chicago. But all that changed after the recently concluded 2021 NFL Draft.

In almost Hollywood-esque fashion the Chicago Bears traded up from 20 to 11 with the New York Giants to draft highly-rated quarterback Justin Fields.

GM Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy gave up their 20th pick to the Giants, along with a 2022 first-round pick, a 2022 fourth-round pick, and a fifth-round pick for 2021.

Justin Fields emerges as a possible starting option for Chicago Bears

In one smart social media move, GM Ryan Pace and the Bears managed to fool most of the NFL fraternity and their own fanbase as well. They attracted major flak for announcing a declining Andy Dalton as their undisputed ‘QB1’. The former Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys quarterback signed a one-year deal worth $10 million.

However, the arrival of Justin Fields changes everything. The Georgia-born youngster has thrown for 5,300+ passing yards with 63+ passing TDs during his 2-year stay with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

He further rushed for 1,100+ rushing yards with 19 rushing TDs as well. He is more than ready to stake a claim for the starting spot in Chicago’s offense. Coach Nagy also spoke about Fields’ arrival with renewed optimism as the Bears look to pick up where they left off when the season begins in September.

“It’s gonna be exciting for (Fields) to just come in here and learn how to be a professional quarterback. It’s not gonna happen overnight. He’s gonna be able to learn from great coaches and from great players that are gonna be the same room from him.”

“And he knows that. That’s the part of Justin is that he’s super mature, he’s very focused, but he’s competitive as hell. Sometimes that pushes people. I think it certainly pushes him, but he does it in a respectful way and he’s had a lot of success doing it,” Nagy said via NBC Sports.
