Naomi Osaka Continues to Follow Serena Williams Footsteps, to Co-Chair Met Gala 2021
Japanese World No.2 Naomi Osaka is starting to become a popular global icon beyond the world of sports. Recently, she received a fanciful opportunity to extend her resume in fashion.
Inarguably, the 23-year-old is recognized now more than ever with her vibrant outfits and expressive character. Also, her multi-cultural ethnic background adds an unrivaled edge to her personality.
All of that led Osaka to the Met Gala 2021, an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. She will co-chair the star-studded night in September this year.
Naomi Osaka, Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, and Amanda Gorman to co-chair the Met Gala 2021
The Met Gala is unquestionably one of the biggest theme-based events in the world. With celebrities coming from around the world in both expressive and expensive clothing, it is a night to remember every year.
Last year, the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic outbreak but is now back on track this year. Interestingly, the four co-chairs for the ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ themed night are young, influential, and successful.
The reigning US Open and Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka is one of the four Gen Z co-chairs. Osaka will have actor Timothée Chalamet, singer-songwriter Billie Eilish, and poet Amanda Gorman in her company.
Notably, apart from Osaka, the rest of the three co-chairs are American. However, the Japanese-born has lived most of her life in the United States since she was three years old. Thus, it makes her one of them.
Moreover, the four-time Grand Slam champion is also the global brand ambassador of one of the most luxurious brands, Louis Vuitton. She even has an exclusive apparel line with athletic sportswear giant Nike.

Before Osaka, Williams co-chaired the 2019 Met Gala
In 2019, the 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams had co-chaired the event. Accordingly, the tennis champion had added glory to the show with her affluent costume.
Following the footsteps of her idol, Osaka will also look forward to the night as Williams had. Despite their ongoing rivalry on a tennis court, they both are hand in hand uplifting the American culture.
Tennis-wise, Naomi played at the Mutua Madrid Open 2021, where she lost in the second round against Karolina Muchova. Although she has a poor record on the clay surface, she was happy with her fighting spirit.
Furthermore, she might play at the next big clay event, the Italian Open 2021. But fans are eagerly waiting to see how she performs at the French Open 2021 this year.
