Former Home and Away star Lincoln Lewis has responded to speculation that he could be being considered for the lead role in an upcoming Steve Irwin biopic.

It was recently reported that 15 years after his death at the age of 44, a biographical film about the beloved Crocodile Hunter is in the works.

Steve’s widow Terri Irwin and their daughter Bindi Irwin, who recently gave birth to her first child with her husband Chandler Powell, are said to be involved in discussions about the project.

While Australian stars including Chris Hemsworth and Russell Crowe have been mentioned as possible contenders to portray the conservationist, another name has also been circulating the rumour mill – Lincoln, who played Geoff Campbell on soap Home and Away from 2007 to 2010.

Although casting is yet to be confirmed, Lincoln reshared a post on his Instagram Story with a photo of him placed alongside a picture of Steve, with a caption that described him as ‘the perfect choice’.

In a second Story post, he wrote: ‘To even be mentioned in the same sentence as the great man is an honor. Fingers crossed a biopic can happen (and I get an audition!).’

According to Australian magazine Woman’s Day, Hollywood insiders have said that movie executives are interested in making a biopic about Steve due to his incredible popularity in America.

‘There’s no way this project can go ahead without Terri and Bindi involved every step of the way,’ a source told Woman’s Day.

‘Steve’s international appeal, particularly to Americans, can’t be ignored and this isn’t the first time a project like this has been presented to them.’

The publication claims that the family want Australian actors to be cast in the film, adding that the end of the biopic will reportedly feature footage of the family in the present day.

Throughout his career, Steve would frequently make appearances on late-night chat shows in America.

His television series, The Crocodile Hunter, which also starred his wife Terri, aired from 1997 until 2004.

The couple had two children together – Bindi, who is now 22 years old, and Robert, who is 17 years old.

Steve died on September 4 2006 after being pierced in the chest by a stingray barb in the Great Barrier Reef.
