Who is Jock Clear, the Race Engineer at Haas F1 for Mick Schumacher?

Mick Schumacher is settling in nicely with the Haas F1 team in the 2021 season. In the last three races, the German has gotten the better of his Russian teammate, Nikita Mazepin. When the season began, Schumacher partnered with Charles Leclerc’s former driver coach, Jock Clear.

This will actually be the second time that the Schumacher-Clear partnership graces Formula One. To be precise, he used to work alongside Michael Schumacher for some time. However, Clear only linked up with the 7-time world champion in his final year with Mercedes.

The Englishman has been on the F1 scene since 1989 with the Benetton Formula One team as the head of composite design. Two years later, the Leyton House Racing team recruited him as a senior designer. For the 1994 season, he joined Team Lotus and took on the role of Johnny Herbert’s race engineer.

After the outfit’s collapse, he transferred to Williams and powered David Coulthard to his first Grand Prix win. In addition to that, he also helped the Scotsman finish third in the drivers’ championship that year.

Who else did he work with before linking up with Mick Schumacher?

Jock Clear has quite a resume and world alongside several other high-profile drivers. This includes being the race engineer of Jacques Villeneuve at Williams in 1996. Together, the two of them eventually won the 1997 world championship. Later on, Clear followed Villeneuve to British American Racing in 1999.

The partnership continued until 2003 and Takuma Sato took up the vacant seat. Aside from Sato, he linked up with Rubens Barrichello until 2009. When the team evolved into Brawn GP in 2009, he and Barrichello powered to third place in the World Championship.

Finally, he joined hands with Michael Schumacher in the then fledgling Mercedes team. Although Schumacher’s return to F1 was less than spectacular, it did set the building blocks for Mercedes’ eventual success.
