Courteney Cox says the Friends cast didn’t actually enjoy dancing in the fountain
The Friends cast dancing away in the fountain has become one of the most iconic opening credits in TV history, but Courteney Cox has revealed that the stars didn’t have the best time filming it.
The 56-year-old – who famously played Monica Geller – made the surprising revelation during her appearance on Thursday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
When Ellen asked whose idea it was to have the cast dance around in the water, Courtney replied: ‘Well, it definitely wasn’t mine. We were in that fountain for a long time.
‘Somebody thought that would just be really fun, and let me tell you what happens—it’s not fun to be dancing in a fountain for hours and hours.’
The Cougar Town alum continued: ‘I remember Matthew Perry saying at one point, and we didn’t know each other that well at that point. But I remember, and this is so Matthew, but he was like, “Can’t remember a time that I wasn’t in this fountain.”‘
Naturally, Ellen was surprised by the revelation and wondered why the cast had needed to spend so much time feeling the footage – which was used throughout the hit sitcom’s 10-season run.
‘Literally, we were just like, “How much longer are we going to pretend to love dancing in water?”, Courteney responded. ‘But it was fun—but not really.’
This has us just as shook as when we discovered that the fountain – which is located on the Warner Bros. Ranch backlot in Burbank, California – was the same one featured in Disney’s Hocus Pocus.
Turns out Courteney isn’t the only one who didn’t have the fondest memories about filming as Jennifer Aniston previously said during a 2016 interview on The One Show: ‘Dancing in a pond, or like, a fountain, felt a little odd. But we did it.’
Elsewhere in the chat with Ellen, Courteney shared hints about the Friends reunion coming to HBO Max later this year.
‘It was so unbelievable, so emotional,’ Courteney stated. ‘It’s an unscripted reunion and we got to be on Stage 24 for the first time all of us in, I forget how many years. 15 years? 17 years?’
The Dirt star continued: ‘It was great. It was really fun. We had a lot of special surprises – and it was fantastic. It really was.’
The Friends Reunion will air on HBO Max in the US.
