Jets HC Robert Saleh Cools Down the Hype Surrounding Zach Wilson

New York Jets parted ways with former first-round pick Sam Darnold earlier this summer. It was no secret that head coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas were on the lookout for a young quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft. So it was no surprise that they decided to move for BYU Cougars superstar Zach Wilson last month.

The Utah-born was one of the top performers in the 2020 college football season. He threw for 3,692 yards with 33 passing TDs against 3 interceptions last season. He is expected to make an immediate impact when he starts for the Jets later this year.

But coach Saleh wants fans and critics alike, to control expectations when it comes to Wilson.

How will Zach Wilson fare in his debut season with the New York Jets?

Speaking to the media at a recent press conference, HC Robert Saleh cautioned the media following the arrival of Zach Wilson in New York. But the former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator also added that the Jets need to put in a collective display in order to ensure that Wilson succeeds in the coming years.

“The one thing about this league is there’s pressure on everybody. Everyone’s under the gun. And I get the quarterback has the most eyes on him, but we’re all under pressure to make sure we’re all helping each other have success. To hide him — you can’t, that’s impossible. If you do that, you’re wasting time.

“The biggest thing we’re going to try to accomplish is to make sure that we’re growing as a football team first, and obviously the questions about the quarterback, how he plays, the scrutiny and the critique that he gets — I get it, that comes with the position. But it’s our job as an entire organization to make sure everybody, all 53, are lifting one another and the entire organization is lifting all 53 in order to get us to where we want to go in the future,” Saleh said at a recent press conference.

Without a doubt, GM Joe Douglas and his team have done a commendable job to strengthen the offense this summer. The Jets also managed to select highly-rated WR Elijah Moore in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Wilson has everything he needs in order to impress ahead of his debut season in the big league. But will he manage to live up to expectations or is this going to be Sam Darnold all over again for the struggling Jets? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
