‘The Last Dance’ docuseries was an instant hit when it came out. The documentary was released in April 2020, as the world struggled with the global pandemic. With the sports scene throughout the world virtually non-existent, the documentary served as a good substitute and a distraction from the grim realities of the world. But it also showed the world the true greatness of Michael Jordan and the 90s Chicago Bulls.
The drive of Michael Jordan
Jason Hehir, the director of ‘The Last Dance’ docuseries, spoke about his interviews with Michael Jordan. Hehir was amazed by the drive and unabashed conviction Jordan had in himself. But he also wanted the world to see the kindness and compassion of Michael Jordan. Hehir heard how he spoke about his teammates in glowing terms and wanted everyone to understand how much MJ cared for them.

Hehir said, “It was illuminating to me that of all the things we discussed, that’s [MJ’s drive] what gets him the most raw. That was him saying, ‘This is who I am.’ And it was a staunch defense of, ‘Like it or not, I brought all these people along with me.’ To me, it was very important to include that it brought him as much joy to see other teammates winning titles as it did to see himself win it, that he’s in for that. It’s compelling.”
‘His Airness’ expected the best
A criticism against Jordan is that he was harsh on his teammates. Jordan himself addressed this during the docuseries, stating that he only expected the absolute most from his teammates. This was because Jordan was giving his 100% on the court and in practice. Therefore, he felt it was right to expect the same from his teammates. But some fans have noted that Jordan sometimes crossed the line in his treatment of his teammates.
But once you earned Jordan’s respect, it was a lot easier to play with him. Golden State Warriors head coach and former Bulls player Steve Kerr has spoken about his experience with Michael Jordan. The two got into a physical altercation during a practice session once. But after they resolved their differences, Jordan trusted Kerr more, and the two found great success together, winning three consecutive NBA titles.
Jordan was extremely driven to succeed. And he expected everyone around him, for better or worse, to match his drive and dedication. While players couldn’t do what he did, Jordan expected them to do their best at all times.
