Wells Fargo Championship Cut Line: How Many Players Will Qualify at Quail Hollow?

The Wells Fargo Championship is taking center stage at the moment. The tournament has returned to the tour after being canceled in 2020 and there’s a lot of anticipation this time. We’re yet to reach the weekend at Quail Hollow Club, but where will the cut line be drawn at the end of 36-holes?

The Wells Fargo Championship has got off to a splendid start. The limited crowd at Quail Hollow enjoyed seeing Phil Mickelson clinch the lead after Round 1 on Thursday. It marked Mickelson’s first opening-day lead in 840 days, and ‘lefty’ was thrilled with his 7-under 64.

While Mickelson has the solo lead after Round 1, Kyoung-Hoon Lee and Keegan Bradley are tied for the second position with a two-stroke deficit. Furthermore, six players are tied for fourth place on the leaderboard. The competition will only increase with each passing round.

Cut line probability at the Wells Fargo Championship

A total of 156 golfers are part of the field at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship. All of them cannot qualify for the weekend, unfortunately, as the organizers will impose a 36-hole cut to filter out the lot.

The top 65 players (including ties) will qualify for the final two rounds at the Wells Fargo Championship. Now the concerned players can only be confirmed after the conclusion of Round 2, but the PGA Tour has already drawn a projected cut line.

The projected cut line is at even par and currently, 72 players will qualify for the weekend if it stands. This number is purely based on Round 1 performance and players who’ve made even par are expected to make the cut. But the cut line is subjected to change.

The Quail Hollow Club is a daunting course and boasts challenging holes. The 36-hole cut can also be 1-over par at the end of Round 2. While there’s a strong 41.8% chance of that happening, the data depicts that there’s a 28.0% chance that it could stay at even par.

The 36-hole cut is more likely to be players with a score of even-par or below. There are currently 72 players who meet the expectation, but the second round has the capacity to paint a different picture.

Currently, a lot of big names stand outside the cut line. While it is too early to tell, players like Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, and a few others are at the risk of exiting the Wells Fargo Championship.
