Where Is the Wells Fargo Championship Played? Get to Know Everything About the Quail Hollow Club

The PGA Tour has stopped in the Queen City of Charlotte for its next phase on the schedule. There are huge expectations as the Wells Fargo Championship is making a return to the calendar after being canceled in 2020. Here’s everything you need to know about the Quail Hollow Club that hosts the tournament annually.

The Quail Hollow Club is often regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the United States. The layout demands massive power and accuracy from a player, so one really can’t master this course easily.

Origin of the course

The Quail Hollow Club is located at 3700 Gleneagles Road in Charlotte, NC. It all came into existence when James J. Harris hosted a meeting at the Morrocroft Farm on April 13, 1959. This date marks the formal beginning of the club.

However, the certificate of incorporation wasn’t officially filed until January 4, 1960. The total property of the club spans nearly 258 acres and the first ninety members at the time of forming were designated as the Charter Members.

The golf course was designed by the renowned George Cobb in 1961. However, the course has been tweaked several times over the years. As per the official website, Arnold Palmer modified a few holes in 1986, Tom Fazio did a redesign in 1997, and once again made modifications to several holes in the summer of 2016.

The first tournament held at the Quail Hollow Club was the Kemper Open in June 1969. Since then, the golf course has hosted other events as well including the 2017 PGA Championship.

The course also features a ‘Champions Park’ which honors the players who’ve won professional tournaments at Quail Hollow. It is situated between the ninth and the tenth fairways and a massive 20-foot rock structure containing the names of the champions.

Wells Fargo Championship: Quail Hollow Club details

The Quail Hollow is truly one of the most challenging layouts in the country. It has also played host to a major championship, so the course is truly elite. The layout boasts the most difficult closing stretch on the PGA Tour called “The Green Mile.”

The par-71 course stretches 7,521-yards and is one of the longest such courses in the country. The course initially used Bentgrass greens but they have been non-existent since 2013. The greens are now Bermuda grass as is the case with most of the golf courses out there.

72-HOLE RECORD: 267, Rory McIlroy (2015).

18-HOLE RECORD: 61, Rory McIlroy (3rd round, 2015).
