Jon Rahm’s Impressive Streak Comes to an End With Missed Cut at Wells Fargo Championship

Jon Rahm came into the Wells Fargo Championship as one of the towering favorites to win the title this year. Alas, the Spaniard’s run came to a premature run at Quail Hollow as he failed to qualify for the 36-hole cut. As a result, Rahm snapped a significant PGA Tour streak that he’d been leading. 

26-year-old Jon Rahm entered the Wells Fargo Championship as the most consistent player on the field. The statistics reflected the same as well, but Rahm hardly found his groove at the challenging Quail Hollow Club.

Rahm, who is World No. 3 on the official ranking, has three Top 10 finishes in his last five starts. This metric alone was crucial in determining his odds at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship. However, one should never forget that golf is one of the most unpredictable sports out there. 

Before the Wells Fargo Championship, Jon Rahm had never missed a cut in 329 days. He had qualified to play the weekend in 22 consecutive tournaments and also led the PGA Tour in this statistic. 

Jon Rahm (22) was way above anyone else in terms of consecutive cuts made, but every good thing has to come to an end. In Rahm’s case, he missed the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship and thereby snapped his year-long streak of making cuts at PGA Tour events. 

The cut line was drawn at +2 at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship and Jon Rahm finished way higher than the desired score. It was not a clinical performance from the Spaniard and one that his fans never expected coming! 

Rahm struggled with his striking at Quail Hollow

The Quail Hollow Club is an unforgiving layout and it demands maximum precision from a golfer. Wind speeds will extensively affect the flight and landing area of the ball and that’s something everyone had to adapt to, this year. 

Jon Rahm shot seven birdies through two rounds, but it was not enough to help him qualify for the weekend. Rahm struggled to perfect his tee shots and only displayed 64.29% driving accuracy in the opening 36-holes. 

Rahm’s 13 total bogeys largely caused his downfall even though he broke below par in Round 2. He shot 76 and 70 in the first two rounds, and the opening day performance is what hindered the Spaniard’s confidence.
