“Government Rules Put Me at Risk”: Bianca Andreescu Yet Again Announces Sad News Ahead of Italian Open 2021

Ever since Bianca Andreescu won her first grand slam title at the 2019 US Open by defeating Serena Williams in the final, the young Canadian couldn’t manage to keep up the winning momentum due to repeated injuries.

During her run at the US Open in 2019, Andreescu defeated the likes of Belinda Bencic, Caroline Wozniacki, Elise Mertens, as she proved to be one of the top talents to watch out for in the future.

However, a knee injury barred her from playing top-notch tennis. The Canadian didn’t play a single match last year owing to the COVID-19, where she had enough time to heal from the injury.

However, Andreescu made her presence felt at the Miami Open as she reached the finals after going past top players like Garbine Muguruza, Amanda Anisimova, Maria Sakkari. She was forced to retire against Ash Barty in the finals after getting injured in the second set.

Just when the Canadian thought of making a mark at the Madrid Open, she was tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving in Madrid. As a result, she pulled off from the tournament.

Andreescu opts out of Italian Open owing to the government rules

Andreescu was eager to participate in the Italian Open. Her name was there in the main draw that was released yesterday. But, rules stated by the Italian government will force the Canadian to put herself in isolation before the tournament.

As a result, the 2019 US Open winner decide to pull off from the upcoming Italian Open. She announced her withdrawal on Instagram.

Although I have tested negative following my isolation period in Madrid and having been back in full training the last few days, the Italian Government rules put me at risk of being isolated again if I travel to Italy, so unfortunately I have to withdraw from the Italian Open this year”, wrote Andreescu.

The last couple of years have been extremely hard on the young talent as back-to-back upsets destroyed her momentum on-court. Andreescu might directly opt to play the French Open and test her luck on the red clay this year.
