Sir Elton John has revealed that that he wrote one of his biggest hits, Crocodile Rock, as ‘a joke’ and that he will ‘never ever’ sing it again after his tour.

The 74-year-old year nabbed his first US number one with the song in 1973 but apparently there is no special place for it in his heart.

Speaking on the Deeney Talks podcast, hosted by Watford captain Troy Denney, Sir Elton said: ‘The last time I have to sing Crocodile Rock I will probably throw a party.

‘It was written as a kind of a joke, like a pastiche.’

However, the flamboyant performer admitted that it hadn’t stopped him performing the song in the past, as it has so many fans.

Describing the ‘big hit’ that it became and how people ‘love to sing along’, he pointed out: ‘Who am I to say, “I am not going to play it” because I play to amuse people and to entertain people.

‘But I have to say when the last show is done at the end of the tour I will never, ever sing that song again.’

However, the music icon also revealed a song that he would never tire of performing – one of his earliest hits, the renowned Your Song.

‘I don’t mind not being able to get away from Your Song because it is a really nice song and I never get fed up singing it,’ he said.

The singer is currently enjoying time at home with his family after his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which began in 2018, faced pandemic-related delays. It is now due to end in 2023.

Sir Elton also shared how he was keen to collaborate with The Weeknd, describing himself as ‘such a huge fan’ and his Super Bowl performance as ‘fantastic’.

He added: ‘He is a giant of music and a giant of a man and I love him.’
