After over a year without experiencing live performances, Broadway fans are finally able to look forward to the return of theater shows.

The likes of Hamilton, Wicked, and The Lion King will be roaring back to life following the pandemic shut down and we cannot wait.

Elsewhere, plenty of new musicals are also starting up following the unexpected pause in production.

September 14 is the date when Broadway is finally allowed to open up, but here’s all you need to know about when each show will return.

Here’s when Broadway shows will return this fall

The Lion King – September 14

The Lion King is a 23-year old juggernaut that embodies everything we love about Broadway. In a rare joint statement, the producers of TLK, Wicked, and Hamilton all announced their plans to return on Good Morning America.

Hamilton – September 14

Hamilton has managed to become even more of a phenomon since Broadway shut down, thanks to the show airing on Disney+. As fans know, it’s been running for six years and many will be delighted to be able to enjoy it live and direct once again.

Wicked – September 14

Wicked will continue its 17-year run on Broadway. In their press announcement, the producers noted that ‘this rare alliance between three of Broadway’s fan favorites sends a message that Broadway is united in its commitment to ending a devastating period of hardship for the tens of thousands who make their living directly on Broadway shows and the tens of thousands independent industries.’

Chicago – September 14

It is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history so it only makes sense that Chicago would jump right back in on the first day under New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s reopening guidelines.

American Utopia – September 17

The musical inspired by the tenth studio album by British-American rock legend David Byrne. Fans got to enjoy the show in 2020 via a film directed by the one and only Spike Lee which premiered on HBO.

Come From Away – September 21

The popular show is also heading back in a bit later on in September, however, a filmed version might arrive on Apple TV Plus before that – just to whet the appetite.

After earning a million dollars during its first week of previews, Six was hours away from officially opening went things shut down on March 12. The musical will finally debut on Broadway starting in September, with opening night set for October 3.

Fan-favorite Aladdin will be back towards the end of September and Disney also disclosed some changes to its ticketing practices for the shows, including news that the company will pay 100% of Ticketmaster service and order fees.

Tina: The Tina Turner Musical – October 8

The Tony-nominated musical is back and Tina is delighted about it. In a statement, she said: ‘I am thrilled that our musical will be reopening on Broadway. I remember with such warmth and appreciation the extraordinary welcome I received at our Opening Night. It felt like a homecoming. I know the role my story serves; I hope the retelling of it is inspirational, a reminder of our capacity for resilience and a celebration of our ability to overcome adversity together.’

Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations – October 16

The musical follows The Temptations’ extraordinary journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Get ready, ’cause here they come!

Inspired by the 1995 album of the same name, the play featuring Alanis Morisette’s hits will return just before Halloween.

The Phantom of the Opera – October 22

The actual longest-running show on Broadway will return in style on October 22.

Mrs. Doubtfire – December 5

They only got to deliver three preview performances before lockdown began, so we’re sure the team behind the musical based on the beloved 1993 Robin Williams film can’t wait until December rolls around.

MJ – December 6

MJ, the new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson, will begin performances on December 6 before the opening night set for February 1. The musical, which is not expected to focus on Jackson’s personal life or controversies, depicts the Thriller star and his collaborators as they rehearse for the 1992 Dangerous Tour.

Diana The Musical – December 16

Two months after a live stage recording makes its way onto Netflix, the musical about the people’s princess will resume on December 1.
