Lindsay Lohan has sent a sweet birthday message to her Parent Trap co-star, the late actor Natasha Richardson.

Richardson, who died in 2009, played Elizabeth James, the mother of Lindsay’s character Annie.

Lindsay famously played twins Annie and Hallie in the 1998 comedy, about two identical twins sisters – separated at birth and each raised by one biological parent – who scheme to get their mum and dad back together.

In an Instagram post on Tuesday May 11 she wished Richardson a happy birthday on what would have been her 58th birthday.

She said: ‘Happy Birthday Angel’ adding an emoji of praying hands.

It was written next to a picture of Lindsay and Richardson together in the film, with the young star smiling up at her on-screen mum.

Richardson, the daughter of actor Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson, died after suffering an epidural haematoma – bleeding that occurs between the outer membrane of the brain and the skull – after a skiing accident.

She is survived by her husband, the actor Liam Neeson, and their sons Micheál, 25, and Daniel, 24.

Earlier this year Micheál, who was 14 when Richardson died, spoke about his late mum and revealed how he wished he could still speak to her.

‘She was a terrific, terrific mother. What I wish is I could have just these adult conversations with her, these random questions about the industry or music,’ he told Times 2.

‘I was a mama’s boy growing up and she was really my best friend. I mean we were all a close family, but Danny was my dad’s boy and I was my mum’s boy, for sure.’

He added that he feels ‘incredible grateful’ to be able to watch his mum back on screen thanks to her films.
