“Time For Me to Do What I Wanted”: Sofia Kenin Opens Up on Parting Ways With Her Father

World No.4 Sofia Kenin recently parted ways with her father Alex Kenin who had been her coach for a long time. The pair went on to win the Australian Open 2020 title and Kenin even ended as the runner-up of the French Open 2020. However, it can be because of her poor form in the 2021 season so far that Kenin decided to make a change in her coaching staff right ahead of Roland Garros 2021.

In a recent interview, Sofia Kenin spoke extensively about how she feels after parting ways with her father. She also revealed the exact reason for doing a change in her coaching team.

“I had great success with my dad, and I felt like now was the time for me to do what I wanted to do myself in terms of my tennis, my career. That’s why I decided that I had to part ways with my dad, but it’s not like in the future we’re not going to get back. We don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see,” said Kenin in the interview.

Kenin reflected that she enjoyed great success with her dad. However, she mentioned that she wanted to do things in her own way now, and thus, she decided to part ways with her father. She also claimed that she and her dad can reunite again in the future.

“Think for now I just need some time for myself”- Sofia Kenin

World No.4 Kenin stated that she would need some time to figure out how to proceed ahead now. She highlighted that she would need to wait a little bit before things become normal for her so that she can enjoy on the court again.

“I think for now I just need some time for myself, figure things out, grow as a person and then we’ll just see what’s gonna happen down the road. It’s going to take time for me to figure out what I want, how I want things to be. It’s just a matter of waiting, the process, and finally just enjoying myself back on court again,” added the American player.

After having a poor start in her 2021 tennis season, Sofia Kenin will begin her Italian Open campaign soon. It’ll be the first tournament that she’ll play without her father- serving as her coach. Will Kenin be able to succeed in Rome this year?
