Skateboarding icon Tony Hawk is stepping into a new role as he has joined gaming and esports company GameSquare as a special advisor to the organisation’s CEO, Justin Kenna.

Based in Toronto, GameSquare has worked with a lot of big names including Blizzard, Ubisoft, and Valve. It is aiming to take ownership over multiple esports and gaming companies with esports agency Code Red Esports its first asset.

GameSquare says its goal is to ‘bridge the gap between global brands and the large gaming and esports communities’ and believes that Hawk is the perfect person to help accomplish that.

Hawk’s career has long been tied to gaming, most notably with the legendary video game series: Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

On top of that, the X Games icon has been a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist as his charitable foundation The Skateboard Project has spent over $10 million (£7m) in finding more than 600 public skatepark projects across the United States.

‘Tony is an amazing person that is an iconic brand in his own right,’ says CEO Kenna who continued: ‘We are humbled that Tony is willing to share his experiences in business, entertainment, sports, video games, and digital media with our leadership team as we grow GameSquare into a leading esports company.

‘In many ways, Tony represents the best of what we do at GameSquare; he is highly sought after by global brands and resonates with an influential group of fans, enthusiasts, and professionals. Tony bridges the gap between brands and fans in an authentic way and has been doing it successfully, and with integrity, for decades.’

Hawk himself added: ‘Esports and video games are bigger than ever, so it’s paramount for companies to authentically connect great brands with hardcore fans. Throughout my career, I have understood that perseverance, creativity, and self-confidence are critical to success.

‘I believe that Justin is building something special, his vision for GameSquare is inspiring. I look forward to sharing my own experience and my approach to success with the GameSquare team.’
