Alastair Campbell accidentally announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died on today’s episode of Good Morning Britain. It goes without saying that the Queen, who is 95, is very much alive.
The presenter, who is hosting the ITV daytime show alongside Susanna Reid for Mental Health Awareness week, was interviewing guest Vinnie Jones when he made the mother of all blunders.
A few minutes later, Alastair realised his mistake and apologised to confused viewers at home saying he got Her Majesty mixed up with Prince Philip, who died aged 99 at Windsor Castle on April 9.
‘We talked a lot about Prince Philip after the death of the Queen,’ Alastair said.
After a few moments had passed, Alastair interrupted Vinnie’s interview to correct himself.
‘Can I just say something, I think I may have accidentally announced the death of the Queen,’ he interjected. ‘I meant Prince Philip of course.’
‘I think people understood exactly what you meant,’ Susanna offered.
Viewers were gobsmacked by the blunder and rushed to social media to point out the error.
‘According to Alastair Campbell the Queen died!!!’ wrote one.
‘I don’t think the Queen is dead,’ another confused viewer added.
At the end of today’s Good Morning Britain episode Alastair announced his takeover on the show had come to an end.
‘I’ve really enjoyed it,’ he said. ‘I do think ITV has been brilliant on mental health.’
Meanwhile, the Queen set out the government’s plan for the year ahead during a pared-down speech in the House of Lords on Tuesday.
It marked her first major public ceremonial appearance since the death of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Beginning her speech, she said: ‘My government’s priority is to deliver a national recovery from the pandemic which makes the UK stronger, healthier and more prosperous than before.
‘To achieve this, my government will level up opportunities across the United Kingdom, supporting jobs, businesses and economic growth and addressing the impact of the pandemic on public services.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
