EA has confirmed the next Battlefield will still be on PS4 and Xbox One but insists that the next gen versions will be considerably better.

The new Battlefield (nicknamed Battlefield 6 by fans but probably just called Battlefield) will be out this Christmas, with EA confirming it’ll be a cross-gen title and promising an official reveal next month.

It’s been three years since the launch of Battlefield 5 and EA are doing all the can to ensure the next game is more successful, with CEO Andrew Wilson describing it as a ‘true next generation game’.

However, moments after he used those words to describe it to investors, he then admitted it was also coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Although the game is widely rumoured to have a modern day setting, and feature battles with 100+ players, EA has said little about its content so far.

What they did say is that the game will be released somewhere between October and December, probably the traditional mid-November slot.

Wilson’s descriptions of the game were purposefully vague, as he promised ‘epic scale, all-out warfare, unexpected moments, and game-changing destruction’ that ‘takes it all to the next level through the power of next-gen consoles and PCs’.

Without offering any specifics, he also said that the player counts for matches would be higher on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with more destruction effects, better artificial intelligence, and more complex physics simulation.

Although EA are adamant that the game will take full advantage of the new consoles the fact that it will also be released on last gen formats implies that the core design will be limited by the less powerful formats.

That’s not surprising given the stock issues with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and the fact that there aren’t nearly as many of them in the wild as there are last gen consoles.

Chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen insisted that the game will, ‘be great on either console’, while referring to the next gen versions as ‘special’.
