Terry Crews says porn addiction nearly ruined his marriage and ‘fame made it worse’
Terry Crews has opened up about how his porn addiction almost cost him his marriage to wife Rebecca King-Crews.
In a new book the couple have penned together, they detail the moment they reached breaking point and Rebecca had told him to leave their family home.
The Expendables star said his watershed moment came when he was talking to a close friend who encouraged him to ‘get better for himself’.
He told the podcast People Everyday: ‘The best piece of advice I ever got was a good friend of mine, he was the first guy I called when Rebecca told me “don’t come home”. He was like “Terry you need to get better for you”.
‘That was a watershed moment. In my culture, as a man, you do good things to get cookies, you do these things to get sex, but actually improve just for yourself- that was a foreign thought.
‘I was like, “Wait a minute, I need to be a better person for myself.” And he basically said “I can’t promise you that your wife is gonna come back to you. You may have lost her forever, but you still need to get better for yourself.”
He continued: ‘Success is the warmest place to hide. I had so many people that were telling me I was great, that it was no problem.
‘Hollywood doesn’t care. They still don’t care if you lose your family. It happens every day, they’re like, “Hey man, now we can put you in three movies.”‘
Rebecca, who has been married to Terry since 1990, agreed that her husband’s stardom didn’t help fix things between them.
She explained: ‘So fame just made it worse. And it’s really true that power and success amplifies what’s already going on inside you, and that is why I couldn’t help him. And I’m thankful and I am lucky that he made the choice to do that.’
The TV host revealed how he sought therapy to improve himself, and was inspired to write a book with his wife so he can help others.
Speaking about the moment they decided to create audiobook Stronger Together they revealed it came when they were asked how they managed to stay married during a Q&A.
‘A young lady got up, and I’m telling all these things about my life and she just said, “but how did you marriage survive?” That was the big question.
‘I said, “My wife is right here I’m gonna let her tell you.” My wife got up and literally slam dunked. The conference was never the same. People were just going oh my god.
‘I realised one perspective was not enough. A husband and a wife gives you a 3D view, Rebecca was like, “let’s make a book.” I can only do it when she was ready.’
